Care and Maintenance

Part of enjoying your new windows and doors is maintaining and caring for them correctly. This guide details the methods in achieving proper care and maintenance, keeping you windows and doors looking and working like new.

How to Control Condensation on Windows

Have you been annoyed with the condensation on your windows? Taking a few simple precautions can help get rid of this annoying problem. Here are a few simple measures to control the condensation on your windows.

Condensation is caused by too much humidity and moisture inside your house, and when warm damp air touches cold windows it condenses into water. This can make it difficult to see out, and may even damage your home!

To deal with this, you can reduce sources of humidity like boiling kettles and pots, get a fan installed in your bathroom or kitchen, circulate the air or open your windows, or simply raise the temperature of your house. Drying clothes on radiators is a huge cause of condensation and plants can also cause humidity.

uPVC Windows and Doors

  • It is recommended that windows or doors are inspected twice yearly for maintenance purposes.
  • Abrasive cleaners or solution containing corrosive solvents should not be used on Dalgan upvc products. It is recommended that surfaces are washed with solution of warm water and liquid detergent, rinsed with water and dried thoroughly.
  • Where a window or door is exposed when open, the lubricant may be exposed to airborne debris. This should be wiped clean with particular attention paid to ensure that channels or drainage holes are not blocked.
  • Any moving parts fitted should be regularly dusted and kept free from dirt and grit. It is recommended that an acid free oil, silicone lubricant or Vaseline be applied to these parts on an annual basis. This will ensure a smooth action and increase the lifespan of the hardware.
  • Remove protective tape on upvc window and door profiles as soon as installation is complete. Leaving the tape on will result in the tape fusing on to upvc frame. It may prove impossible to remove this tape at a later stage.

Timber Products
During the Build Phase

  • Keep timber product dry and monitor moisture levels. Excessive condensation can cause structural deterioration and the possibility of mould growth.
  • Ensure that any coating is keep intact at all times and repair if deemed necessary.
  • Where a surface has been cut on site, ensure that it is re-coated and that any nail holes are filled and coated.
  • Where building materials such as plaster or concrete have come in contact with the timber product, this should be cleaned off with a non acid based cleaner. Failing to do so, could cause damage to the coating and timber stain.
  • On completion of the build, ensure that house is heated and ventilated.

General finishing and cleaning requirements

  • It is essential that all timber surfaces are coated with high quality paints or stains as soon as is practical. Failure to do so could cause permanent damage to the timber and void warranty.
  • On an annual basis doors and windows should be inspected for coating damage, particularly in relation to glazing beads, sills and lower areas. Any damage noted should be repaired as soon as practical.
  • Abrasive cleaners or solution containing corrosive solvents should not be used on Dalgan joinery products. It is recommended that surfaces are washed with solution of warm water and liquid detergent and then rinsed thoroughly with water. This will help prevent the growth of mould which can be a result of the build up of dirt on surfaces.
  • Glass and timber may be scratched during cleaning. Make sure cleaning rags have not picked up any grit, remove rings from your fingers and be careful with scraping devices.
  • Any moving parts fitted should be regularly dusted and kept free from dirt and grit. It is recommended that an acid free oil, silicone lubricant or Vaseline be applied to these parts on an annual basis. This will ensure a smooth action and increase the lifespan of the hardware.
  • Do not paint gaskets, interlocks or any other surface that comes in contact with other parts.
  • Due to the fact that timber is a natural product it may be required to sand down any uneven parts that have arisen due to the contracting and expanding of the timber. Remove dust particles with a soft dry rag before re-coating the area.
  • Where parts of joinery show signs of wear and tear, it may be necessary to redecorate. The frequency of this will depend on the climate and the position of the joinery in relation to the elements.

Glass

  • Glass may be scratched during cleaning. Make sure cleaning rags have not picked up any grit, remove rings from your fingers and be careful with scraping devices.
  • When washing glass, use a solution of water and mild detergent. Ensure that glass is rinsed free of detergent.
  • Remove glass labels as soon as possible following installation.
